I meet a lot of people who say they want to achieve more, have more, be more—which is basically what abundance is, right? Personally, however, I think there are levels. See, I define abundance as “having more than you need.” More—that’s the keyword. And so I think there are levels to this state of being, this state of abundance.
What level of abundance do you think you’re at?
That question might be a little difficult to answer at first, especially when you consider the fact that there are so many types of abundance. You have financial abundance, emotional abundance, health and energy, relationships … there’s quite a lot! For the sake of keeping things simple, we’re going to focus on financial abundance.
Now, think of abundance like a numbered scale. 100 would be a billionaire, and let’s be honest—a billionaire would have a lot more in terms of financial abundance, right? You could consider them completely financially abundant, hence the 100 rating. Then on the opposite end of the spectrum, someone would garner a -100 if they were completely un-abundant—they don’t even have enough for themselves! An example of someone at this level this would be someone forced to live on the street.
These 100 and -100 ratings right here are already two extreme levels of abundance. So, keeping that scale in mind, where do you think you are? Where do you feel you are? What about your emotional abundance? Between someone overflowing with love and affection, and someone completely devoid of warmth, cold and emotionally stunted, where do you fit? Where would you put yourself? And what about health and fitness?
WHAT IS ABUNDANCE
Abundance is something a lot of people are looking for. It’s something so many of us want to achieve. And it’s the mindset of actually receiving a lot. When you can step into this feeling of abundance—“I have enough, I’m getting more,”—when you’re completely satisfied, and you know you have enough, but you’re excited for even more of it. Write that down; that’s abundance. “I have enough, and I’m excited for even more of it!” Satisfaction plays an important part, but so does genuine excitement.
THE SECRET OF ABUNDANCE
It all comes down to this one thing; this is critical. Imagine you have a cup. A cup of emotions, a cup of wealth, a cup of energy. Most people are trying to get abundance without filling up their own cup. They’re trying to get into this abundance of giving; they’re trying to give and give out of an empty cup! If your cup isn’t overflowing, and you insist on giving from it, eventually it’s going to empty out. If you’re giving away what you have, you end up back in scarcity.
This is something I see in so many entrepreneurs; they give to their team, then they give to their spouse, then they give to their children, and they give, and give, and give until—all of a sudden—they’re in this place where they’re stressed out and lacking. They are not in any sort of emotional or financial of abundance. They have been giving from their own cup and now their cup is empty.
When you can give into the feeling of “I have enough, I’m giving away the excess, there’s more and there will always be more, and it feels great,” that’s when you’re in abundance. If it feels like there’s this tap that’s always turned on, and it’s filling up your bucket to overflowing, that’s when you’re abundant, and you can begin to give out of that abundance.
Today, why not notice how your life is already abundant? Look at the places where you already have more than you need. Feel grateful for it, feel satisfied with it, and then still want more—that’s the secret to getting more of it. Gratitude and excitement for the more that is sure to come, because once it’s overflowing you can begin to give out of that excess. Abundance starts internally, and once you feel it and recognize it for what it is, you’re going to appreciate it even more. You’re going to learn to love the place that you’re in, where you can give and give and give and not worry about depleting your own cup.
Here’s my question: are you focusing and are you satisfied with what you have, while still having that desire to have more? Are you only giving away what is overflowing, or are you reaching into your own cup? As entrepreneurs, small business owners, people creating a change, it is so important that you look after you first. If you aren’t in abundance, your company won’t survive.
